Hyogo Prefecture

Hyogo Prefecture

Hyogo Prefecture is located in western part of the Kansai region and is famous for Himeji Castle, one of most beautiful castles in Japan.

Hyogo prefecture is the largest prefecture in the Kansai region and one of three prefectures that face two seas. To the North is the Sea of Japan, and South is the Seto Inland Sea. The prefecture served as one of the places where western culture entered Japan. This is due to the port of Kobe opening in 1868 as Japan continued to trade with different countries. Hyogo also has many mountains, as well as a couple of famous Onsens (hot springs), Arima Onsen and Kinosaki Onsen. Both Onsen have been for around for 1300 years, and many famous writers, politicians and even emperors of Japan visited the Onsens. These Onsen areas still have old traditional buildings along the streets.

The most famous castle in Hyogo is Himeji Castle. The most notable feature of this castle are white colored exterior walls. It has been registered World Heritage since 1993 and is one of the 12 original castles in Japan. It was originally built in 1346 and was never involved in a battle nor used as a battleground. Hyogo also have one another famous castle, which is Takeda Castle. This castle is placed on top of a mountain where at the right conditions will be surrounded by a sea of clouds. It has been referred to as “The Castle in the Sky,? which references Hayao Miyazaki’s work Laputa.
