Aso

An active volcano with different activities around the location such as strolling paths and Ropeways, also known as the landmark of Kumamoto giving it the name of Hinokuni, located at the center of Kyushu Island, Japan.

Aso

Mount Aso is an active volcano with the world’s largest caldera located in the center of Kyushu in between Kumamoto and Oita Prefectures in Japan. The name of Hinokuni or Land of Fire has been given to Kumamoto thousands of years ago due to legends revolving around this volcano. This active volcano consists of five peaks which are Mount Neko, Mount Taka, Mount Nakadake, Mount Eboshi and Mount Kishima with the highest peak at 1592 meters above sea level. The last eruption was during the Edo Period in 1793 with thousands of people passing away from this disastrous event. Today Mount Aso has turned into a popular tourist site among locals and foreign travelers. It is the only active volcano in the word to provide a close up view of the Nakadake crater. Volcanic gases and rich sulfur fill the surroundings and float up into the sky. However, areas of the volcano are sometimes completely closed off to ensure the safety of visitors from poisonous gases and volcanic activities. Ropeways, strolling trails and driving paths lead up to the crater for visitors to enjoy the natural scenery offered at Mount Aso in Kumamoto prefecture, a view which represents Japan as an open air geological museum. Travelers should remember to check the current restrictions before visiting the location to ensure a peak at one of the natural forces of Japan.
