Onuma Park

Onuma Park is located on the Oshima Peninsula, which is in the southwestern part of Hokkaido. In 1958, Onuma Park was designated as a Quasi-National Park and is the smallest major park in Hokkaido. Quasi-National Park’s in Japan are defined as area’s which constitute a prominent major natural landscape comparable to the landscape found in Natural Parks and are managed by prefectural government rather than the national Ministry of the Environment. The park covers 35.07 sq. mi of the area around Mount Komagatake, which is a truncated stratovolcano. The eruption from this volcano created the iconic Lake Onuma and Lake Konuma. These two lakes are a result of the mudflow from Mount Komagatake, which created a natural dam in a stream separating it into two bodies of water. In the lakes, there are 126 islets that can be reached by boat. However, there are 18 bridges connecting to a select few islets allowing travelers the opportunity of reaching the small pieces of land by foot. In 1905, Onuma Park was voted as one of the New Three Views of Japan along with Miho no Matsubara in Shizuoka and Yubakei in Nakatsu.

Onuma Park is a popular tourist spot for people who love the outdoors. There are campgrounds that people can use and if they want to explore the area there are various ways of getting around. There is a sightseeing boat tour that lasts about one hour and goes around the lakes, providing picturesque scenery. The lakes are filled with water- shield plants, which are similar to water lilies. In autumn, it is best to travel around the park by foot to see the color of the leaves up close and still get that beautiful background with Mount Komagatake. Then in the winter time, the lakes freeze over with thick layers of ice allowing tourists to try different winter activities. One of the popular activities for fishing enthusiast is the “Ice Fishing for Wakasagi (smelt).” No matter what season you go in, Onuma Park will have great views.
