Located in northeast Hokkaido. In winter, drift ice comes down all the way from the Sea of Okhotsk.

Monbetsu

Monbetsu is located northeast of Hokkaido. Every year around January or Febuary, drift ice comes down all the way from the Sea of Okhotsk. Monbetsu hosts an annual Drift Ice Festival at the same time as the Sapporo Snow Festival. The city of Monbetsu proudly holds the drift ice as the symbol of the city. One of the most popular things to do in Monbetsu is riding the icebreaker ship during drift ice season. If visitors do not want to get on the ship, but still look at the drift ice, then guests can visit the Okhotsk Tower. Tourist can also visit the small Okhotsk Sea Ice Museum to learn more about drift ice. One of the most popular locations to visit is the seal rescue center, the Okhotsk Tokkari Center. Monbetsu is the center for research on sea ice, an international conference is held every February on the topic.
