Matsue Samurai District (Matsue Buke Yashiki), also known as Shiomi Nawate Street, is a 500m long road known for its traditional aesthetics. Only walking distance from Matsue Castle, the area offers a glimpse into what middle-class samurai life would be like during the Edo Period. Among these buildings is the well-preserved Buke Yashiki, an original former samurai residence open to the public for viewing. Constructed in 1733, it serves as an excellent example of how a middle rank samurai lived. The house displays daily materials, furniture, and a garden in the sense of a samurai lifestyle.

Visitors will also discover the former residence of Lafcadio Hearn. Hearn was a receptive writer and world traveler, eventually marrying the daughter of a samurai family and becoming naturalized as Koizumi Yakumo. He is one of the first western authors of Japanese culture, such as “Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan”. His simple, but beautiful samurai house is located next to a Memorial Museum dedicated to Hearn and his works.
